We are calling on the City of Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, and the state of Florida to fund and implement four critical restorative projects on the North Fork.
"These solutions are practical, proven, and overdue. The technology exists to clean up this river; all that is missing is the political will."
Dredge shallow, silt-heavy segments of the North Fork. Removing the accumulated layers of toxic black sludge and restoring historical depths will immediately increase tidal flushing and water flow. This prevents stagnation and reduces pathogen levels.
Establish automated water quality monitoring stations and schedule daily runs for municipal marine trash collection boats. Implement floating debris traps at canal entry points to prevent garbage from drifting into the river.
Replant native riparian foliage, including red mangroves, cordgrass, and shoreline shrubs. Native vegetation naturally filters runoff, absorbs excess fertilizers/nutrients, and provides vital habitats for local fish and birds.
Install low-impact floating docks, kayak launches, and educational signs at local public parks along the North Fork. Encouraging kayaking, canoeing, and rowing rebuilds the community's connection to the river and drives civic pride.
